See Copenhagen through the eyes of Danish architect Sofie Lund Michaelsen, as she points towards some of her favourite places.
In 2023, Copenhagen has been awarded UNESCO-UIA - World Capital of Architecture in recognition of its strong legacy within architecture and innovative urban development, along with its high ambitions on climate, sustainable solutions, and liveability.
For that reason, we have asked a couple of Danish architects to give their opinions on what makes Copenhagen special .
Let architect Sofie Lund Michaelsen guide you through Copenhagen, and show you some of her favourite places. Places that tell stories about life, and history as well as point to the future.
Here's the four places mentioned that encapsulate what Copenhagen is all about:
Christianshavn
Get the best of Christianshavn. Expect hygge all year round and a down-to-earth atmosphere in this beautiful part of Copenhagen, which is technically a part of the city center, but definitely has its own distinct neighbourhood feel.
Hart Holmen
Trained in the science of baking, Richard Hart was the baker at Noma, before he opened up his own bakery. While pushing the norm of what a Danish pastry is, Hart Bakery has become famous for its mouthwatering pastries.
Refshaleøen
Refshaleøen is the dynamically evolving hip area in Copenhagen. The area was once home to B&W, one of the world’s biggest shipyards. Keeping its raw and industrial look, various new leisure developments now draw locals as well as tourists to the island.
Royal Danish Play House
Whether you have a ticket for the evening's performance or not, feel free to peek inside the beautiful foyer, visit the café, or stroll along the oak-boarded gangway encircling the Playhouse and connecting it with the Langelinie waterfront promenade.

Let's go on a journey through the city of Copenhagen with architect Anders Lendager and find out what his favourite places are and why. Some of the key values for Anders is that Copenhagen is a livable city, a place to experience and find daily joy, whether it is jumping in the harbour for a swim, going out for lunch, and so on.
Here's the places mentioned that encapsulate what Copenhagen is all about:
BaneGaarden
Hidden behind the train tracks you will find a green path that leads you to BaneGaarden. A brainchild of four green entrepreneurs, aspiring to make a change and share knowledge on sustainable ways of doing life.
Kødbyens Fiskebar
At Fiskebaren it is all about fish and seafood, fresh, healthy, and delicious food and good wines. The atmosphere is informal and the interior is quite rough. Fiskebaren has a Bib Gourmand in Guide Michelin Nordic Cities.
Konditaget Lüders
It’s not your usual playground. At Konditaget Lüders, high up above the harbourfront in Nordhavn, you can work out and play with a view of the city and harbour on the roof of a multi-story car park.
Sandkaj Bathing Zone
Sandkaj bathing zone is open year-round and is a part of the boardwalk in the newer part of town, Århusgadekvarteret in Nordhavn. During summer this is a much-loved spot for sun-lounging and bathing in the harbour while in winter it’s mostly winter-bather that take advantage of the facilities.
